If your child has a difficulty expressing himself and/or processing
1the language of others, they may have a language disorder.

Language Disorders are Complex But SLPs Break Them Down Into Three Categories:

Receptive Disorders

Includes the difficulty or inability to understand the distinct sounds of language or process the meaning of verbal or written language. Language Receptive Disorders can greatly affect a child’s capability to perform socially and academically, thus proper diagnosis early on is very important.

Expressive Disorders

Includes the difficulty or inability to produce certain sounds, express ideas and words, and form language correctly. The ability to find and express words takes place in a different part of the brain that other traditional language therapy focuses on, and verbal expression should be thoroughly tested as its own capability early on.

Mixed Receptive-Expressive Disorders

Sometimes, children have a combination of receptive and expressive impairments, which may even be accompanied by an underlying cognitive disorder.

Common Language Disorders:

  • Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)
  • Language Processing Disorder
  • Language-based Learning Disorder
  • Aphasia
  • Mutism and Selective Mustism
  • Dyslexia

The nuances and lifelong effects of language disorders are why BrainWaze is committed to thorough screening and diagnosis from the very beginning of our relationship with you.
